Microform Processing
Before the digital age, storing documents on microforms (microfilm, microfiche, aperture cards) was used as a preservation and reduction solution for companies and organizations with large document sets. However, several disadvantages came to light, such as requiring expensive machines to view or print frames, the inability to easily make copies of these microform images, and difficulty retrieving a specific document within a large microform collection.
WWD has qualified staff and state-of-the-art scanning hardware and software available to digitize your microform collection. We are able to scan a variety of source forms such as 16mm and 35mm roll film, aperture cards, jacketed and COM microfiche, and more. Images can be scanned in a variety of formats (TIFF, PDF, JPG, and more), in either bitonal (black and white) or grayscale, and at resolutions of up to 600 DPI. As the image quality of many film collections is poor, WWD utilizes several digital image enhancement techniques such as automatic image cropping, despeckle, deskew, and character enhancement in order to produce the highest quality images.
In addition to scanning, WWD provides customized indexing and unitizing services to allow for easy retrieval of scanned microform documents within a document management system. High quality OCR can be performed to not only allow for categorical searching, but also to allow fulltext searching as well. This process allows institutions such as banks, law firms, government agencies, and others to easily transform their old microform collection into a modern digital archive that will save time and money for future use.
